About Us[edit]
Metamimicry is an environmental nonprofit operating out of Olympia, Washington, dedicated to exploring accessible biological solutions for our time's most pressing environmental pollutants. We work to serve tribes, non-profits, small governments, and businesses in the Puget Sound region through research-backed bioremediation methods. Our mission is to utilize pre-existing infrastructure to restore the environment's ability to remediate soil, water, and air while advancing grassroots bioremediation techniques through community-centered education and implementation. We pursue funding primarily through grants, allowing us to research, design, and implement solutions at little to no cost to our partners.
What We Work On[edit]
Pollutants We Address[edit]
- Stormwater pollutants affecting native salmon populations
- Petroleum hydrocarbons and diesel contamination
- Heavy metals in soil and water
- Agricultural and industrial runoff
- Air pollution (including wildfire smoke particulates)
- General soil, water, and air contaminants
Methods We Use[edit]
- Mycoremediation - Using mushrooms and fungi to break down pollutants (specialty focus)
- Community workshops - Hands-on education for backyard and community-level remediation
- Research and documentation - Building evidence base for grassroots techniques
- Indigenous knowledge integration - Working with tribal partners for traditional ecological solutions
Current Projects[edit]
Digital Bioremediation Library Construction[edit]
Building a comprehensive online research library at [bioremediate.net] compiling published articles, community projects, and educational resources for accessible bioremediation implementation.
- Location: Online resource accessible globally
- What we're treating: Knowledge gaps in grassroots bioremediation
- How: Research compilation, video educational series, cultivation guides
- Status: Actively collecting research papers and expanding content
Past Success[edit]
Mushroom Filter Development Workshop Series[edit]
We conducted hands-on workshops throughout the Puget Sound region teaching community members to create their own mushroom-based bioremediation systems for backyard and community garden applications.
- Location: Various sites in Olympia and Puget Sound region
- What we're treating: Stormwater pollutants, general soil contaminants
- How: Mushroom bucket filters using oyster mushrooms and other fungi species
- Status: Actively running workshops and scaling up community implementation
Festival of the st̓əč̓as Bioremediation Workshop[edit]
Successfully conducted mushroom bioremediation workshops at the 2nd Festival of the st̓əč̓as, teaching participants about mycoremediation fundamentals and providing take-home mushroom filters.
- Challenge: Public education about accessible bioremediation techniques for water quality improvement
- Solution: Hands-on workshop combining education with practical mushroom filter assembly
- Result: Equipped dozens of community members with knowledge and tools for home-scale bioremediation implementation
